Over the weekend

This weekend's been pretty packed with guitar hero sessions and stayovers 'cause my parents are away! Had the psych gang over this afternoon and the pets on fri night. Celebrated annie's belated at Firestation Hillside Gastrobar which serves surprisingly decent food at reasonable prices.Cedele has pretty good cuppies, much nicer than Cake Ave.

Nice movies are flooding the cinemas this period. Caught "Julie & Julia" and "500 days of summer" recently and I really like the former. I think 500 days is alright but pretty overrated imo. Maybe my expectations were too high after hearing countless praises for it. I mean I like the mod, 60s style and the non-linear perspective but all these ideas aren't exactly very original and on the whole, somehow, the film lacks depth. Compared to similar style films like Amelia and Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, it comes across as slightly pretentious. J&J has a much more entertaining, funny and original storyline imo.

I've been feeling slightly ill since yesterday. Hope i'm not falling sick. Work btw, has started to pile up with the addition of projects.

Tis the season to get married?

Is it me or is 2009 a good year to get married? A sec sch classmate held her wedding recently, i've got a colleague's wedding to attend tonight, another colleague's wedding to attend next month and apparently another sec sch mate has just gotten married as well.

By the way, I caught "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs" with the pets this week. The film's super hilarious even though the plot's more or less predictable. "Up" has a better plot imo. I think the company you're with affects the way u view a show, especially for comedies and cartoons. The fact that i was sitting next to auntie who was laughing throughout made the movie even more funny than it actually is. Though i still find the film more entertaining than the average cartoon. "You are abt to be crushed by a giant corn" is the funniest of all.

Anyway, I got really sick of my ever-long hair and went for a haircut yesterday. Its not that long anymore but still tie-able. I think the hairdresser did quite a good job because I like the way I look currently. Plus, shorter hair is so much easier to wash, comb and manage.

I lurrrvee food

Finally managed to satisfy weeks of craving for black sesame cream paste. i really like coffeeshop desserts, esp sesame paste, tang yuan soup, ice kachang and green been soup. I feel extremely greedy today. had prawn mee and chee chong fan for breakfast and just finished a huge curry puff on top of the sesame paste less than 5 mins ago. And i still have tang yuan soup for later. Ha! All the food's from old airport rd hawker centre which has a crazily huge variety of food. really felt like ordering food frm half the stores this morning.

Ive been really wanting to visit taiwan recently. must be all the tourism campaigns going on around here.

Last set of grad pics

Tomorrow's the start of my 3rd week at work and i anticipate more stuff to do. Frankly, work has been pretty boring for the past 2 weeks 'cause i havent really started on the research project proper but i'm kinda worried cause after the resident researcher goes on long-term leave next week, it'll be me and only me working on the project alone for the next 1 yr...without any proper supervisor or anything. Sigh. It's a pretty lonely job actually cause i'm the only researcher in the entire organization and the department i'm in only has 1 other part-time staff who I don't get to see much of anyway since she's always busy. For once, I really feel pretty lost. Well...guess there's nothing much to do but wait and see how things go from here.

Met sun, jas and yuenmei today to take my last set of grad pics before I return the gown next wk. Frankly, I'm really sick of the gown cause i've already worn it like 3 or 4 times for picture taking and its just so heavy and thick that I always feel like im drowning when I wear it.

Some of the pics taken at ucc and botanic gardens.

I can't wait for fri cause it'll be a long weekend! Have to treasure public hols alot more now.

Aches & Blisters

It's been a rather busy week, was up and about everyday shopping, eating, exercising, watching movies... Speaking of which, I watched 3 films this week. Quite a record given that the last movie I watched before the latest Harry Potter was about 2 years ago. I've almost forgotten what it's like to be in a cinema. Oh how i miss the sweet and salty popcorn. Anyway, "Up" is a really nice film, and considering that I'm not a fan of animation, this is saying quite a bit. I really like the graphics, music and characters, esp the lil' boy Russell.
"Coco Before Chanel" was mediocre at best. A real disappointment because Audrey Tautou's works are usually quite entertaining and memorable. This one just has poor execution, poor direction, poor characterization and plenty of banal and pretentious expressions. I really dislike cliched artistic scenes where the actor poses stylishly with a cigarette or stares blankly into space with a very artistic-looking backdrop. Aesthetics aside, what is the point seriously? Unless there's a purpose to it, I really see no reason in littering the film with such scenes. It's just like an empty canvas placed in a beautiful frame. All hype but no substance. Tautou's best film is still "Amelie" imo. The last film is a 40 min mini-documentary on Van Gogh screened in 3D at the omni-theater. The super wide screen gave me a slight headache but the film was alright. Just didn't really like the way they impersonated Van Gogh and speaking English in that silly french accent. As if they could really read his thoughts.

And now, the reason for the title of this post. After rollerblading with the pets non-stop for 2hrs at ecp this afternoon, currently, my legs are aching, my feet feel like sore jelly and i've got 2 blisters on my toes. But I had a fun time and am quite impressed with myself. The last time I bladed was in sec sch and I initially thought I would end up waddling like a duck the whole afternoon but it wasn't that bad at all :)

See the huge blister? Pricked and took care of it just like always. I think i'm quite good at handling blisters.

Tea w Ni

Met annie in town yesterday and we tried tea and snacks at the really quaint and charming 1 Caramel. I was initially afraid that the pretty-looking cakes would taste bad or mediocre (like those in the many other superficial Patisseries) but surprisingly, they're pretty good, especially the Citrus Ricotta Tart.

Cool figurine of Shenton Way and really cute but expensive cuppies (a crazy $6 per cup!)

Fruit tea and Asparagus & Mushroom Quiche.

Chocolate Berry Lust and Rose Lychee Cake

And the really scrumptious Citrus Ricotta Tart

I'm gonna have to pay dearly for consuming so much sugar and alcohol recently. I can just imagine how horrible the pain'll be when my time of the month comes. Shucks.

Change of space

I've decided to switch from LJ to blogspot simply because I dont like all the ads and banners on LJ. Well there's actually a function to switch LJ's layout to exclude ads but the instructions are so blardy chim so i really can't be bothered even though i do have a lot of time to spare currently.

Anyhow, met up with sun tonight again to celebrate her b'day but this time, with jasmin and sam. Dinner at del mar and dessert at coffee bean. It's amazing how ghostly quiet del mar is on a monday night. Food's average and super ex.
